Pokémon VGC

The Video Game Championships — Pokémon's official competitive Double Battle format played on Nintendo Switch.

What is VGC?

VGC (Video Game Championships) is the official competitive format for Pokémon video game battles, sanctioned by The Pokémon Company International (TPCi). Players build teams of Pokémon and battle in Double Battle format — each player brings 6 Pokémon and selects 4 for each match.

At The Trainer Shed, we run regular VGC tournaments using the current official ruleset, Regulation M-A, giving players the chance to practise and compete using the same format as Regional Championships, International Championships, and the Pokémon World Championships.

VGC is now played on Pokémon Champions, which launched in April 2026 and succeeded Pokémon Scarlet & Violet as the competitive title.

Format Rules

  • Double Battle (4v4 from team of 6)
  • Species Clause — no duplicate Pokémon
  • Item Clause — no duplicate held items
  • Level set to 50 for all Pokémon
  • Official VGC timer (7 min per player, 45 sec per turn)
  • Best-of-3 in Top Cut
